SCG led a group including Shanghai Municipal Engineering Design and Research Institute (Group) Co. Ltd., Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, and Polytechnic University, and established the Trenchless Construction Technology Research Center in Shanghai.
Using the National and Shanghai’s medium and long term scientific and technological development strategies as their guiding principles, and aim at the “environmental protection and resource conservation”, the Center researches and promotes rational use of urban underground space by implementing trenchless construction to reduce the impact on the environment without compromising the project quality and objectives.
Realizing the potential of trenchless technology, SCG began developing technology for pipe jacking since the 1950’s. By the 1970’s, an underground long distance pipe jacking construction technology was developed and successfully implemented.
Through constant research and innovation, the development of the intermediate jacking stations, and breakthroughs in high voltage electric transmission technologies, microtunnelling using the steel pipe, concrete pipe, concrete segmental liner and fiber reinforced pipes with diameters ranging from 1.2m to 4.64m had been successfully constructed in a straight and curved alignment.
SCG is recognized as the leading contractor capable of installing pipes underground for long distances in China, and has set several records in terms of the size and length of microtunnelling project in China and abroad. These projects include pipe jacking in areas like the bottom of the Yellow River in Shandong province, Xi An wet soil, and in the Yunnan plateau.
